Capitalism did not start out as profit being the driving factor at the expense of public well being. This arose in the mid 70s and took firm hold by the mid 80s. Adam Smith, the 18th century economist and philosopher, who has been widely quoted out of context, believed that profits would reduce and wages would go up once an industry/business matured.
