Steppenwolf is not an easy read. Hesse was in a dark place when he wrote it. Narcissus and Goldmund I love, Siddhartha is universally considered one of the most spiritual books ever written, Demian played a role in my life, and I loved his first novel that I just read last year, Peter Camenzind. I touched on it here. https://medium.com/write-under-the-moon/learning-to-love-by-observing-the-art-of-dying-well-2048b13f71d2 I still have what is considered his best work in my anti-library, The Glass Bead Game.
The Journey to the East is a short and easy read with a lot packed in the suitcase.
