Many writers do not understand copyright law. For example, many think they can freely use an image posted on FB--FALSE. The guidelines we prepared for Illumination are somewhat more strict than they need to be legally, but that is for the intent and purpose of erring on the side of editors who do not know the law not being asked to make legal judgments and to err on the side of protecting the owner from liability and the pub from being shutdown by Medium, a la "The Innovation."
