Fakelore--that's a great word. Reminds me of the daily MLM pitches I heard my friend participate in from my apartment when I let her stay with me during COVID. I would hear so many claims that made me roll my eyes. She just looked at me as a nonbeliever and why wouldn't I believe everything they said. Well for one thing, hearing so many, I noticed how the embellishments, that's what they proudly called them, would morph over time. Kind of like the telephone game but in this case it was simply the same speaker altering what he had said on earlier calls. And some of the claims were so easily debunked and when I did, my friend just wouldn't hear it. Like the claims that the company was started by billionaires who made their money elsewhere and they just want to help people with their health and wellness products. One of the founders was referred to as the owner of "Idaho Potatoes." Well, that's a trademark owned by the State of Idaho...I couldn't even find his name on published lists of the largest farmers in Idaho. Didn't matter to her. "Why would they make this stuff up," she would say. "Nobody but you questions..."
