From the audience of one, I can't disagree with your instructor.

There was a time in my youth when I wrote a great deal of poetry. One of my English instructors once told me that too many of my poems were so personal that I lost connection to the reader. I had to remember that no matter how brilliant my turn of phrase or how profound my experience was, if it was not communicated in a manner others understood, then it was no longer a communication, merely a pretty jumble of words, a map to nowhere.

From the audience of one, I can't disagree with your instructor. On the other hand, when we write poems for ourselves and post them, synchronicity will often connect them to people who will understand and benefit from them.
