How do you define philosophy to your students? It can be a way of thinking, it can be a love of wisdom/knowledge, and it can be seeking to understand fundamental truths about ourselves, the world in which we live, and our relationships to the world and to each other. In those lights, philosophy, along with science and spirituality, can definitely help solve problems.
When philosophy is used to argue and prove something, or when it's just an acadameic conversation, that is when students may look at it as useless.
When philosophy is a framework for solving problems, it's useful, as are science and spirituality, and each should be valued and "married" to the others in an interdependent relationship. I know you've read my Ménage à Trois Between Science, Spirituality and Philosophy
They should have a permanent and mutually satisfying interdependent polyamorous relationship. Perhaps your readers will appreciate it too. https://medium.com/p/a634f5446364
