I agree that the steps are great. Personally, I don't think there need to be 12, and while I believe in God as I understand that term, I think that certain understandings dominate the rooms and that is unfortunate and turns off many. https://medium.com/illumination-curated/12-step-programs-god-problem-dea17a6e0536

Back to the steps, I have written (https://medium.com/illumination/spirituality-redefined-ff45cb53eaf2) that every person would benefit from incorporating steps 4, 5, 8, 9, 10, and 12 into their lives. I think high school curriculum should include these steps that don't discuss addiction, but for one word in step 5 that can be ignored in the schools, they don't discuss God, and they promote awareness (aka mindfulness), both of ourselves and others, which leads to serenity.

In the first half of that essay I distinguish religion and spirituality and I also say: "When I use the term spiritual, I use it in a manner that transcends the binary of theism versus atheism. One can act entirely spiritual with or without a belief in “god” however one understands that term. Spirituality only requires love, empathy, compassion, humility, honesty and courage. As I define spirituality, there is a flip side to the coin and all those positive feelings— accountability, both personally and holding others accountable for their words and deeds."

I think that definition fits what AA is supposed to be.
