d your … empathy is usually highlighted as the main characteristic feature of a narcissist. My question is: if they are completely deprived of empathy, how do they know how to hurt you? How do they know how to push every button of yours? How do they understand your emotions so well?

I believe it’s called cognitive empathy. They can intellectualize what they cannot feel. This also allows the really clever ones to manipulate and play the victim.
