I completely agree with you, and I'll take it further than dating--many marriages are legal prostitution. I wrote this tanka poem well over two years ago:
Love’s a condition
that should not have conditions
Love with conditions
is a property exchange
It’s legal prostitution
It was inspired by White Feather's essay, https://whitefeather9.medium.com/prostitution-and-divorce-bae0df9fc677, in which he writes:
"There is a little prostitution involved in practically every relationship. Prostitution is merely a means of exchange and we all are involved in exchanges that have subtle hints of prostitution at certain levels. With unconditional love there is no exchange. Exchange is always conditional!"
I feel strongly about destigmatizing (and legalizing) consensual sex work for other not cynical and personal reasons. The kindest and gentlest woman I have known and who I loved with all my heart and soul... see my https://medium.com/know-thyself-heal-thyself/a-defiant-lovestory-89d431ba5bf9
