I don't believe this attitude is only held by a certain age bracket, plenty of young people have the follower mindset. Also, what do you deem old? I'm pushing 55 and since my spiritual awakening at 53 I've certainly marched to the beat of my own drummer (which does not mean I (or you) don't care about humanity as one commenter implied).
