I don't find it strange at all.

…ast week. For those of you who don’t know my story, my husband, her son, died almost ten years ago. People find it so strange that I not only still keep track of my mother-in-law, but we usually see each other a couple times a week. They wonder why, after a decade of being without her son, I’m still so involved with her. The answer is quite simple. I love her.

I don't find it strange at all. Even if you didn't love her, you each shared love for her son / your husband. People that find it strange are just labeling all in-laws with the meddling and difficult stereotype.
