I also equate the use of "wonder" with "curiosity," which in my view, does not kill the cat. Apparently, the original phrase was "care kills the cat," with "care" meaning concern or worry. That usage makes sense to me. I think the usage of "curiosity" that makes sense as a negative is being nosey.
