I had a similar thought as I read it and everything you say about looking shit up on the internet or in books (angel #'s the worst offenders) is true and it may be that DL's guides were simply trying to get her attention but it could also be that they used different birds for a reason and that they suspected she might consult thouse books. Saying she did a bad job of decoding was quite strong.
