I have the suggestion that people who like my pieces subscribe box checked in my profile as well and it has been checked since I started writing and thus Medium auto creates that request at the bottom of my stories. Subscribers are an entirely different category from followers, and subscribers do tend to lead to reads, whereas followers do not. I have not modified the language to include a hey, subscribe to me and I'll subscribe to you suggestion, which I have seen from others (not you), and I was not addressing that portion of my story to any individual writer, certainly not you. Those that have made that request, whether in their stories or via other modes of contact, know who they are and I was simply explaining why I subscribe to no one. I appreciate your subscription. We engage with another enough that even if I don't see your story the day it's published, my web feed shows your icon in the people I follow line, with an indication of how many stories I may not have read, and I eventually catch up.
