I highlighted too many related lines to choose one highlight off which to make this comment. As I think you suspected I could do when you suggested I give this one a read, I see connections between your article and my poem and notes yesterday, https://marcus17043.medium.com/nonconformists-are-not-rebels-fdacdb633a58
Nonconformists are flexible as we do not refuse to conform but rather it's in our nature to find our own path and at the same time be open to adjusting ourselves. In contrast, both conformists and rebels may be rigid thinkers.
My poem contained this stanza:
"Binary thinking
Polarity consciousness
Scourge of our species
Surf wavelengths between the poles
Coherence in the rainbow"
Binary thinking is black and white thinking. Very rigid. No gray/grey. Incapable of nuance. Incapable of dialectics. As you describe all that, cognitive rigidity. Binary thinking along with confrimation bias, which your article also describes, are scourges upon humanity.
The last two lines of that stanza reflect cognitive flexibility.
