I like this one very much. I don't see anything deterministic about it--more chaos theory if anything. There is a middle ground of planning or at least preparing several moves ahead for several contingencies, which I do not think your story is philosophically counter to, though that type of planning is more important and possible in, for example, a business or litigation strategy than planning ones life, which is the focus of your piece.
