I remember reading an article about the neuroscience of memory many years ago and what I am about to say may mean that I a not recalling the article correctly, but I am, or at least I think I am. 😉 Scientists used to believe that memories form circuits that are simply replayed in the same place in the brain that it is stored. Then they discovered that memories are packaged away someplace and when they are recalled they are literally recalled to a different part of the brain where the memory can be realized, and then when we are done relating it, it is stored away again, but every time we recall and then put away again, the info changes in minute ways that over time build up and become different enough that the memory may be unreliable
