If someone else was affected, amends may be required before one can forgive themselves and move on. That's the essence of Steps 8 and 9 of any 12-step program.

Step 8: “Made a list of all persons we had harmed, and became willing to make amends to them all.”

Step 9: “Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.”

Every human could benefit from understanding and working steps 4, 5, 8, 9, and 10 into their lives regardless of whether one has an addiction or some other obsessvive compulsive disorder. The second half of my essay, Spirituality Redefined, Plus a program for living a spiritual life, discusses that. https://medium.com/p/ff45cb53eaf2
