is the smell noticeable from a distance or only up close or only if the leaves are broken?

As do the invasive "Stink Bugs," https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brown_marmorated_stink_bug or so I'm told as I've been warned not to kill them by smooshing. I've learned to cohabitate with them in the house. When I first moved here two years ago I found them disturbing. Now they don't bother me.
