Non market economies like the former USSR and current China are also massive polluters so capitalism, of which I am no fan at least how it has devolved, no matter how you define it is not the problem. (I see now you did say this farther down than I was in the story)

When I say capitalism has devolved I mean Adam Smith believed that profits necessary for investment and innovation would go down and wages would go up as a business or industry matured. The 1%s bought and paid for economists such as Milton Friedman to flip the script in the '70s.
