I felt sparked to write this tanka immediately upon reading this New York Times article informing readers that the F.B.I. appears to have opened an investigation of Boeing for criminal negligence. (I’ll provide a gift link below).
It’s about time, not only concerning Boeing but likely countless other corporations beholden to the almighty profit and the scourge of ethical societies, stock markets. Yes, investors should have a market through which to monetize their investment. However, most owners of stocks just participate in casino games, and should not have their gains taxed differently than ordinary income.
In law school, I learned about the concept of strict liability — a concept designed to remove profit calculations from matters of public safety. It seems we need to expand the industries and events subject to this doctrine.
