That's why I often write in comments and my essays, that happiness and sadness, not to be confused with mania or depression, are but fleeting emotional signals to show us what we do and do enjoy, but true serenity is not found in chasing happiness or avoiding sadness, but settling into ever hopefully higher baselines of contentment to which we can return when the emotional fuel fades.
