There is a difference between picking on a member of the general public and picking on a celebrity who signs up for this and has openly talked about her condition. I am not judging anyone in this situation. All 3 played a role and all 3 have self-reflection to do. I wrote this comment the other day in Tim Wise's essay on the incident and my comment has 194 reads and 38 people clapping--likely my most highly thought of comment: I can't speak to all the systemic issues you speak to here. I can speak to what I see on the individual level here and that I think many are too quick to judge Smith. People are judging him for the slap. People are judging him for an inadequate apology. His emotional state was probably already charged being up for the award. Then I see that before he reacted with anger he first laughed at the joke, which was quite funny, until he saw Jada's reaction. Then I imagine he felt guilt and shame (perhaps exacerbated by his mother's history that you mentioned here [Will witnessed his dad beat the crap out of her]). I can't help but wonder to what extent the anger that he took out on Rock was actually anger with himself projected upon Rock. I say give the man time to reflect, however long that may take."
