Dad left school at age ten when Germany invaded Italy in 1943 and took his father prisoner. As the eldest son, it was up to him to provide for his three younger siblings and help his mother, who was now a slave to the soldiers who occupied their house. I can only imagine all she endured and what my father must have witnessed. I’ll never know. He never spoke of the war. It was Mum who told the stories.
