When I woke before dawn EST on Sunday and saw in my alerts that Assad had fled Damascus for then parts unknown, I immediately wrote a poem titled: A Prayer for Syrians,
People deserve better than other oppressors.

"dictator escapes
slinks away in dead of night
bodies and ruins
of once proud society
left behind in unmarked graves

he tortured and bombed
to hold misbegotten wealth
now, he will eat Putin's cake
nature abhors a vacuum
Allah, Hashem, Coptic Christ
please save men, children, and especially women
from the barbarians at the gate

Afghanistan banana stand
people are not just hot rocks
they are treasures
deserving of protection
not more oppression
