Excellent piece, Penguin. Provocative title. ;-) I highlighted much and made sure to read it all the way through before making any comments. The words I highlighed here, and these words later, "We’re all unique and we’re all struggling with being human in the best way we can," connect to my criticisms of AA (applies to all 12 step programs) and rasing hands to identify as an ____aholic. I have written, "The leaders of 12-step program groups accuse anyone who questions the dogma of suffering from terminal uniqueness and tell them to shut up, sit down and listen if they want to succeed. ... A group-think mentality that gaslights individual thought is the antithesis of spirituality." https://marcus17043.medium.com/efficacy-of-12-step-programs-for-addiction-treatment-c111fbffc10a
I believe that uniqueness is vital, not terminal. You may like my poem and discussion, https://marcus17043.medium.com/nonconformists-are-not-rebels-fdacdb633a58, which starts out with this these 3 stanzas (6 in total):
Question bedevils many, conform not conform
Are you asking right question, or fooled by labels
Act with authenticity, that’s path of Spirit
Die integrity intact, Sacred epitaph
Individual
Member of society
Nonconformists us
String unique pearls together
Beautiful necklace of life
Binary thinking
Polarity consciousness
Scourge of our species
Surf wavelengths between the poles
Coherence in the rainbow
